Theodore Waddell

Biography

Born: Billings, Montana 1941
Current residence: Rygate, Montana

Theodore Waddell is an artist and cattle rancher in Montana. His imagery comes from his observations of the effects of weather and the seasons on various animals in the field. Waddell’s images visually evoke the physical sensations of snow, rain, dust, wind, and heat. Horizons disappear, and the figures of the animals seem to hover in an indeterminate space, abstracted by the harsh conditions of the Western environment.

Artist Statement

When I paint, I try to set up a problem to be solved, whether a juxtaposition of cattle against a skyline or landscape at a certain time of day. I want to know more when I finish the painting than I did when I started; about color, atmosphere, my feelings about the subject...I started painting animals about thirteen years ago. After several years at the ranch, it made sense to deal with the specific animals we were responsible to and for. They are all unique; with different and individual characters...I like being a part of the painting traditions, a long and glorious tradition. I have continued to experiment and my work has changed a great deal during the past few years. I hope it will continue to change, reflecting what I learn.
